Darksun: Live Review
By Aniruddh "Andrew" Bansal

February 23rd 2010, Whisky-A-Go-Go, West Hollywood CA: Orange County metallers Darksun hit the stage at 11 to play in front of a small crowd that had gathered at the Whisky tonight. I would describe their music as a blend of metalcore and groove metal with some thrash elements in it. After a first listen, I would say they definitely had some tight riffs and vocals, the drummer being the one who impressed me the most. This kind of music very well suited the age group of fans present at the show, mostly teenage kids and young adults, making it a very lively atmosphere. Local bands playing at the Whisky or at any other place for that matter, are allotted a maximum of 30 minutes for their set. Darksun made good use of their 30 minutes. Darksun are an unsigned band as of now but I'm sure that if somebody representing a record label was here hunting for a promising band the person would have been impressed by Darksun. I hope good things happen to this band.

People might dismiss metalcore as not being the real or old school kind of metal, but when it comes to a live show, this type of music certainly gets the kids moshing. The small gathering here did plenty of that, all in good fun too. I really wish that more number of people turned up for these kinds of shows. Going to see the bigger bands is all well and good, but supporting the local metal scene is the only thing that will ensure that we have good bands to listen to in the future and that metal music in general has a fan following. May be some people just think it's below their 'standards' to attend such gigs. But from what I know, at least the LA scene is much healthier than in other cities so that's a great thing, and I feel lucky to be a resident of a city whose underground music scene has plenty of metal bands as part of it.
