Gabba Gabba Heys: Live Review
By Alison Cohen
As I write this, I am soaked in sweat, and have not rocked harder in a LONG time. Seriously, I could LIVE at a Gabba Gabba Heys show. I can't believe I have waited so long to see them play again. I saw them at the Anarchy Library in Long Beach a million years ago, (2004) and the timing/location hasn't worked for me since. But, after seeing them again tonight, I don't care where they are playing next, I need more, and I will see them again soon. As I was walking up to the club, I actually heard some cool sounding punk, but couldn't tell who it was or where it was coming from. It turns out, it was a Misfits tribute band called 13SK8. They really made me want to go listen to the Misfits! But not until I saw the Gabba Gabba Heys!
Donned in denim and leather, the four-piece hit the stage rockin' "Blitzkreig Bop," and didn't give us a second's rest until the last song of the night. As any Ramones fan knows, their songs are loud, fast, short and sweet. Every song is an anthem. I was front and center, dancing, singing, and jumping up and down to every song. There were a few times throughout the night that I thought I might die of exhaustion, yet I kept rockin,' and so did everyone else. During their high energy set, they rocked through "Teenage Lobotomy," "Cretin Hop," "Shock Treatment," "Rock-N-Roll High School," "Do Ya Wanna Dance," "Rockaway Beach," "California Sun," "I wanna be Sedated," "Sheena is a Punk Rocker," and "Commando." They ended their killer performance with "Chinese Rock." The Gabba Gabba Heys have the look, the vibe, the stage presence, and most importantly the sound, to keep the Ramones alive. The only member without sunglasses on the entire night was "Johnny," and you could hardly catch a glimpse of "Joey's" face behind that wild mane. I truly believe if Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee were still alive, they would be proud to see their legacy continue to grow through the Gabba Gabba Heys.
