Fetal Injury: Ain't No Party Like A Donner Party EP
By Tyler Crooks
Release Date: February 5th, 2010 Record Label: Unsigned My rating points:
Fetal Injury is an unsigned Grindcore/parody band based out of St. Louis. The members consist of Chuck Owens (guitars/vocals/bass) and Brian Staack (drums/vocals) their debut demo/EP "Ain't No Party like a Donner Party" is hilarious, ridiculous, and pretty awesome. The album opens up with Adenocarcinoma (yeah, try pronouncing that) which is fast as hell, but incredibly short. This track is really reminiscent of Anal Cunt's early work. Fast, incomprehensible, and under-produced. I can't make heads or tails of it, musically, but it sounds awesome, and with verses like "Give your baby birth defects, and smoke your pack a day, I'll still come out laughing, cause you're a fucking cancer patient " what's not to love? (Hilariously, the band members themselves are all smokers...) "Adenocarcinoma" transitions nicely into the next track, "Long Pork Sandwich", which is another short, fast, indistinguishable song. All about the delicious food cooked up at your local McDonalds, with a Soilent Green twist! (Spoiler, the burgers are made of people!) The instrumentation on this track is pretty good for a home recording. Everything is nice and fast, and the vocal trade-offs on it are pretty great. The songwriting is pretty funny on this track, with lines like; "You will be my burger, I'm eating you today, you taste fucking delicious, it sucks that I have to pay." "Ursine Menace" has to be my favorite track on this album, because it's about bears; natural selection incarnate. This is the only track on the album that has an actual riff, and some kind of song structure. This track is only a minute long, but it packs a hell of a lot in such a small time frame. The song consists of the same riff and chords over and over, but it sounds pretty good. Once again, the songwriting is amazing, especially this little gem of a line; "massive arms to smash your skull, teeth to eat you spleen, they'll eat your wife and baby, bears are fucking mean". All in all, "Ain't No Party like a Donner Party" is pretty intense, but the mixing needs a hell of a lot of work. Some of the songs sound pretty good, some sound like pure static, but if you can get past that, and if you're a fan of grindcore, you'll dig this album. I give it a 6/10 because the production is horrible and the songs need to be a bit longer. Other than that, everything else is pretty good.
