Editor's Note: Even though this album was released exactly a year ago, we want to promote the band's appearance at the New England Hardcore And Metal Fest this coming Saturday April 16th, hence we decided to post this review today. For details on the festival, go to the band's facebook page.

Since "The Farthest Reaches" was released last year, Son of Aurelius has been making a big impact on the metal scene. Only having been together since 2009, the band does show a lot of promise. Vocalist Josh Miller punches out aggression with high shrieks and low growls and the double pedal drumming that Spencer Edwards shows on tracks like the opener, "Mercy for Today" is impressive. The title track has some great guitar work going between Chase Fraser and Cary Geare as they keep it up at nice galloping tempo. "Facing the Gorgon" is enticing, with solos that range from delicate to powering weave their way in between Miller's vocals. "Pandora's Burden" is one of the most brutal tracks by far with massive riffs and Miller's shrieks while "A Champion Reborn" shows they can pump out some good melody. "The First, The Serpent" is another impressive track with an amazing solo and Miller's vocals are the top of the game with ferocity. What I was a little disappointed with on the album was not hearing bass, it seems to have gotten buried on a lot of the songs underneath the guitars and drums but maybe that will be something brought more to the surface on future albums.

Son of Aurelius are not doing anything entirely new here but they are strong and bring a hell of a lot of talent to the table. You'll want to check out "The Farthest Reaches" and keep an eye on what else these guys will deliver in the near future!
