BISON b.c.: Dark Ages (Album Review)
By Kate Wilcox
Release Date: April 13th, 2010 Review Date: March 23rd, 2011 Record Label: Metal Blade My rating:
I will be the first to admit that stoner or doom metal has never really been my thing and I'm not all that too familiar with Bison b.c. but I wanted to take the opportunity to cover their latest release "Dark Ages" just to get out of my comfort zone and try something different, and I have to say that I'm genuinely impressed. While the 7 tracks clocked in anywhere between 5 to 8 minutes, I can honestly say that I was never bored listening to any of them. You can hear that the group is pursuing a darker, more somber sound with this album. James and Dan's vocals are harsh in a way that combines low growls and anguished cries. The opener, "Stressed Elephant" starts out with a very melancholy passage that eventually opens up to a thrashier rhythm giving the track a bolt of energy. "Fear Cave" follows with that same energy and doesn't hold back when it come to aggression. Bison b.c. then takes on a totally different form with "Melody, This is for You" where you get to hear the talent of drummer Brad Mackinnon before the screeching guitars set in. Anguished vocals are set against a very heavy and I would almost say forlorn melody. "Two-Day booze" kicks it back up with a wailing riff and sets back into that thrash tempo while still keeping a nice groove. Bison b.c. will never fall into any predictable rut on "Dark Ages", there's enough variety on here to keep you on your toes. The continuation of the Wendigo saga with Part 3 is a perfect closer to the album, starting out with beautifully played acoustic guitar before pummeling you with its brutality and then quietly coasting right back out again. Bison B.C has delivered a great album that both existing fans and newcomers alike will enjoy. Listen to "Two-Day Booze" using our player! | ||||||||||||||
