SMARAGOS: Smaragos (Album Review)

By Kate Wilcox

Release Date: March 29th, 2011

My rating:

    Track Listing:
  1. Furnace
  2. Primordial
  3. Scaphist

Put together in the summer of 2010, Smaragos consists of Max Zigman (Son of Aurelius) and Riley McShane. Bringing in a combination of brutal death metal and ambience, the pair shows the world that they are not afraid to try new things and explore different genres.

A bit bass heavy, "Furnace" is also brutal with fierce double pedal drumming and low growls but lends a sense of atmosphere from the sitar and synth that's being played in the background. "Primordial" is a straight force of savagery as McShane switches back and forth from low growls and high shrieks. "Scaphist" holds some tight musicianship as it pummels with a shredding solo and drums played at breakneck speed.

Smaragos shows a lot of promise and gives us something that can't be categorized in just one area of metal and will peak listeners' interest.
