They've been called everything from space rock to progressive to electronica, but Zombi are ones who follow their own path and let you get lost in the beats and rhythms that keep you in a trance-like state. "Escape Velocity" carries a retro and futuristic vibe, at the same time with the guitar-less instrumental aspect to it. Anthony Paterra's drumming brings in additional weight to Steve Moore's keyboards and synths to ground the tracks and not have the music itself drift off into space.

The title track carries a deep rhythm with almost bass-like synth effects while "Shrunken Heads" brings in a disco-esque beat that will have you tapping your foot along with it. "DE3" is one of the longest tracks, clocking in around nine minutes, but takes on one of the most mature and disciplined approaches toward the music, in the beginning building up gradually before it takes on full climax in the second half. While all the songs on the album are on the long side they never meander, there is always a structure to it and keep it on track with its captivating rhythm.

While I would say this is not particularly my cup of tea, I tip my hat to Relapse for having this band on their label. It shows they are able to have diversity and put something new on the table for the listeners. Moore and Paterra bring in the elements of prog rock and electronica and make it into a sleek design. If you're looking for something new and fun to put in your music list you might want to give Zombi's "Escape Velocity" a chance!
