DC4: Electric Ministry (Album Review)
By Tyler Crooks
Release Date: August 1st 2011 Review Date: August 23rd, 2011 Label: Metal Blade My rating:
The album opens with an interesting introductory track entitled "Wrecktory", a short, but very well written piece, featuring acoustic guitars with heavy electric distortion behind it. While a bit slower than most DC4 songs, this track is a perfect way to set the tone for the album. "Wrecktory" leads into the title track, "Electric Ministry", a 4 minute ode to the gospel of heavy metal. Jeff Duncan and company are in incredible form on this track, with harmoniously perfect riffs, thick, low bass, and pounding drums. Jeff and Rowan's trade-off soloing on this track is superb; a bit complicated, but not too technical. This is LA metal at its finest. Electric Ministry is an album full of gems, from the fantastically pornographic "XXX" to the heartwarming ballad "Dirty Hands", Electric Ministry has a song for even the most discriminating old-school metal snob. You can hear a lot of varied songwriting influence on this album, while retaining complete modern originality and an old school LA vibe. On the guitars, Jeff and Rowan are a true dynamic duo. Their riffs and solos bleed soul and emotion without sounding too self-indulgent or pretentious. Of course, Shawn Duncan is a fantastic drummer and really gets to show his skills off on this album with the accompanying bass skills of Matt Duncan. The Duncans are truly a blessed family and really get to showcase their individual talents on this album. Overall, DC4 have created another epic album to add to their ever-growing repertoire of recorded material. This is a wonderful follow-up to their debut album Explode, and I believe that this album will really solidify their spot in the heavy metal history books. | ||||||||||||||
