POWERGLOVE: Saturday Morning Apocalypse (Album Review)
By Tyler Crooks
Release Date: September 28th, 2010 Record Label: E1 Metal My rating points:
On September 28, 2010, Nerd-rockers Powerglove released their second full-length studio album, entitled "Saturday Morning Apocalypse." The band has deviated from their usual theme of metal renditions of video game music, and is exploring the diverse world of Saturday morning cartoon themes, and theatrical scores. The album opens up with the theme for the classic X-Men cartoon show, and it's absolutely killer. The riff-work and song structure is damn near perfect, and the tones are crisp, clean, and warm. Everything rings through clearly and seems incredibly solid. This album explores TV and film culture throughout the ages, from the theme of the 1990s hit show Pokemon, to the timeless Flintstones theme; this album has something for even the most discriminating television and film aficionado. My favorite track on this album has to be "This is Halloween," from Tim Burton's infamous "Nightmare before Christmas." The fact that Powerglove managed to take one of Danny Elfman's scores and turn it into a thunderous heavy metal epic is mind-blowing. The greatest thing about it is that it doesn't drone on repetitively like other "theme covers." The musicianship on this track is brilliant, to say the least. The sweeps are clean, the drums are nice and fast, and everything is rich and harmonious with a great balance of technicality and creativeness. Simply put, if you were ever a child, you'll love "Saturday Morning Apocalypse." From the Batman theme, to the theme from Inspector Gadget, you're almost guaranteed to find something that you'll love. The nostalgia factor in this album is high, and everyone will have at least one "that takes me back" moment while listening. Powerglove have put a new twist on some old classics with "Saturday Morning Apocalypse," and shows how diverse heavy metal really can be. Tweet | ||||||||||||||
